Five for Friday!

T.G.I.F.!!!
We made it friends.
It's finally Friday and I am joining Doodle Bugs Teaching for a Five for Friday Celebration!
In Social Studies this week, we wrapped up our unit on Famous American Leaders in our country.
I made this little teaching powerpoint on President Obama and the kids found it fascinating!  They really enjoyed the family photo!
I added this unit as a freebie in my TPT store.

I also incorporated an amazing lesson on "Balancing the Budget" which I found in Sarah Paul's President's Day unit.
Presidential Packet
This was a totally amazing lesson!
The kids were completely engaged.
We did the first budget together on the Elmo-

If I only have two dollars, what organizations get the most?  and WHY?

Students could choose to give up to 50 cents per organization.
Choice #1- Recess Equipment
Choice #2- Books
Choice #3 Specials
Choice #4- Materials
Choice #5 Technology
I was SO EXCITED to see so many students giving a full 50 cents to BOOKS in the classroom!

Then we explained our WHY with this writing extension activity.
The kids then got into small groups and shared their feelings and opinions about balancing the budget.
The conversations happening were truly phenomenal!

Another famous American Leader in our Country was a surprise to many of my students.
We celebrated the life of Ruby Bridges this week and again, had some amazingly touching conversations about friendship and equality.

As you can see by our class totals, Ruby was the favorite!
Last month, the floods came to Room 102 and saturated a ton of my books.  After a gloomy few weeks of clean up, a very special package arrived and brought a HUGE ray of sunshine to my day!

My incredibly sweet friend Kelly, from First Grade Fairytales,
http://thefirstgradefairytales.blogspot.com/
sent me this letter-

AND,

Kelly, you are my sunshine!
Thank you so much!
